Although it's winter, beekeepers must consider carrying out all seasonal tasks, as recommended by ANZM specialists. They should take into account the following:
-
Periodic checking of the apiary to prevent disturbances and unrest among bee colonies due to attacks by animals or birds such as mice, domestic birds, woodpeckers, magpies, sparrows.
-
Monitoring the wintering condition of bee colonies by analyzing the buzzing of bees through periodic auditory checks (listening to colonies using a rubber tube with a diameter of 0.8-1 cm).
-
Analyzing various residues, the quantity of dead bees found on the ground in front of the hive, residues removed from the bottom of the hive (using a bent wire or a "bottom board" whenever time allows).
-
Quietly removing ice and snow from the flight boards of the hives, clearing out dead bees from the hive entrance, and possibly placing a thin layer of straw or leaves in front of the hives for bees to land on during cleansing flights; checking the hive positions.
-
Preparing and administering sugar syrup patties and sugar candy plates or crystallized honey to bee colonies that have been wintered without sufficient food reserves.
-
Repairing, cleaning, disinfecting hives and beekeeping equipment, painting hives; finalizing and wiring frames.
-
Supplementing beekeeping materials through acquisition based on the production and development plan for the coming year.
