Water: the ignored indicator that limits production before feed

Water intake is often the first factor to decline when farm conditions are not properly managed. Even when rations are correctly formulated, production may decrease without obvious explanation, and the cause is often access to water or water quality.

In dairy farms, the water-to-production ratio is direct: approximately 3–5 liters of water are required for every liter of milk produced. A decline of just 10% in water intake can reduce daily production by 1–2 liters per cow. In pig farms, insufficient flow at drinkers limits feed intake, affecting growth rates and batch uniformity.

Problems often arise from technical details: low pressure, insufficient drinkers or improper positioning. During the warm season, high temperatures increase water requirements by as much as 20–30%, and undersized systems quickly become a limiting factor.

Daily verification of flow rate and actual access to water provides one of the fastest corrective measures on a farm. It does not require major investment, but it directly influences intake, feed conversion and production.
