Biosecurity – A Major Challenge for Romania’s Pig Farms
Biosecurity is one of the biggest challenges for pig farms in Romania. African Swine Fever (ASF) has caused significant losses, and the costs of implementing effective protection measures are considerable. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADR), small farms must invest at least €50,000 to meet the required biosecurity standards, while large farms may exceed the €500,000 threshold.
The main measures include: controlling access to farms, modern disinfection systems, sanitary filters, strict feed management, and continuous monitoring of livestock. Although the investments are substantial, they remain the only viable solution for preventing the spread of diseases and maintaining production at a competitive level.
The 2023–2027 CAP Strategic Plan (PNS) provides dedicated funding lines for biosecurity, with support intensities of up to 70% of the investment value. Experts emphasize that accessing these funds is vital for the survival of pig farms and for reducing Romania’s dependence on massive pork imports.
Through the proper implementation of these measures, Romania could limit the spread of ASF and gradually rebuild a competitive swine sector at the European level.
