Poultry meat is the most consumed source of protein in Romania, with an average annual consumption of 28 kg per capita, according to Eurostat 2024. Domestic production covers over 90% of demand, making the poultry sector one of the most efficient branches of Romanian livestock farming.

Consumption trends indicate growing demand for processed and value-added products, such as marinated chicken, semi-prepared items, and “ready-to-cook” products. At the same time, the “Clean Label” segment—raising poultry without antibiotics and with natural feed—is gaining ground, already accounting for 15% of the market.

The average farm-gate price of poultry meat was 13.8 lei/kg in 2024, while retail prices ranged from 16 to 18 lei/kg, depending on the product category. Exports have been directed mainly to non-EU markets, including the Middle East and North Africa, where demand is on the rise.

For 2025, production is expected to stabilize at 1.4 million tons, but farmers will continue to face pressure from energy costs and EU-imposed animal welfare standards. Product diversification and adaptation to consumer requirements are the keys to long-term success.
