Red meat has been the subject of numerous international debates, and the World Health Organization (WHO) has issued clear recommendations regarding moderate consumption. The WHO Report of 2023 emphasizes that excessive consumption of processed red meat is associated with increased health risks, including cardiovascular disease and colorectal cancer.

In the European Union, these recommendations have been integrated into public health policies and influence regulations on product labeling and promotion. Eurostat shows that in 2024, red meat consumption in Romania was 36 kg per capita, above the European average of 32 kg.

INS confirms that young people in urban areas are reducing their consumption, while in rural areas it remains high. “WHO recommendations do not prohibit consumption, but promote balance and transparency for consumers,” says a Romanian nutritionist.

FAO shows that Western markets have begun to regulate advertising more strictly and to promote healthier alternatives. For Romania, the challenge lies in adapting the industry to these changes without affecting competitiveness.

Processors can respond by diversifying their product range, reducing additives, and promoting clean-label products.

In conclusion, WHO recommendations on red meat should not be seen as a threat, but as an incentive for modernizing the industry and aligning with international public health standards.
