Romania is one of the most important cereal producers in the European Union, and in favorable agricultural years total production frequently exceeds 25 million tonnes. Exports of wheat and maize place the country among the leading suppliers to markets in the Middle East and North Africa.

However, the structure of the commercial market is dominated by international companies specialized in agricultural commodity trading. Global traders manage a significant share of cereal flows due to their access to logistical infrastructure, financing and international markets.

A central element of this system is the Port of Constanța, one of the most important grain export hubs in the Black Sea region. The port terminals handle tens of millions of tonnes of cereals annually, originating both from Romania and from other countries in the region.

For farmers, the structure of the commercial market directly influences the formation of prices at the farm gate. In the absence of their own storage capacities or strong cooperative structures, many producers depend on the collection networks and logistical infrastructure operated by traders.

This structure reflects the globalized nature of the grain market, where prices are influenced not only by local production but also by developments in the world’s major exporting regions.
