The agricultural cooperative is frequently presented as a solution for strengthening farmers’ market position. According to Eurostat and European Commission data for 2024–2025, in Western European countries, more than 50% of agricultural product marketing is carried out through consolidated associative structures.
In Romania, the number of registered cooperatives has increased in recent years, yet the degree of economic functionality varies significantly. Some are established primarily to access tax incentives or European funds, without developing real activities in collection, processing, or joint negotiation.
A functional cooperative requires infrastructure, working capital, professional management, and a commercial strategy. Without these elements, legal status does not automatically translate into market power.
For 2026, the distinction is not between the formal and actual existence of a cooperative, but between a formal model and an economically active one. Genuine consolidation can enhance bargaining power and income stability.
