Ahead of the Energy Council Meeting, Copa and Cogeca Urge Full Recognition of Farmers and Agri-Cooperatives in EU Energy Security Reforms
Ahead of the upcoming Energy Council meeting, Copa and Cogeca have announced that they sent a letter to COREPER urging EU decision-makers to ensure that farmers and agricultural cooperatives are fully recognized in the ongoing revision of EU energy security regulations.
Ongoing discussions on gas supply security and preparedness for electricity risks are critical to safeguarding Europe’s economy and competitiveness—but they must also consider food security.
Strengthening energy resilience requires the modernization of rural electricity infrastructure, the improvement of permitting processes, and the provision of financial incentives to support on-farm and agri-cooperative renewable energy generation.
A clear strategy is needed to support the deployment of biogas, digesters, and renewable energy storage solutions, enabling farms and cooperatives to contribute to Europe’s energy independence.
The role of combined heat and power (CHP) systems should also be strengthened, as they provide both heat and electricity, benefiting farm operations while enhancing grid stability.
Farmers and agri-cooperatives play a vital role in developing sustainable energy solutions, particularly during periods of gas shortages. Rural energy communities can also foster public acceptance of renewable energy projects.
Therefore, aligning energy security policies with agriculture and the circular bioeconomy is essential to ensure a resilient food supply chain and a greener energy future for Europe.
Copa and Cogeca are calling on EU ministers to incorporate these priorities into the revision of Regulation (EU) 2019/941 and into broader energy security measures.
