In recent years, European agriculture has been marked by significant increases in the cost of agricultural inputs. Fertilizers, energy, fuel, and plant protection products represent some of the most important components of farmers’ expenditures.

According to analyses by the FAO and the European Commission, fertilizer prices increased sharply during the 2021–2022 period, mainly as a result of rising energy costs. Although the market stabilized afterward, cost levels remain high compared with the previous period.

Within the structure of production costs for crop farming, fertilizers can represent between 30% and 40% of total expenditures. Fuel and mechanized agricultural operations represent another major component, especially in the case of large farms that intensively use agricultural machinery.

This evolution in costs reduces the economic margins of farms and amplifies the risks associated with price fluctuations in agricultural markets. In years characterized by lower production or declining cereal prices, cost pressure can significantly affect the profitability of agricultural holdings.

For Romanian farmers, adapting to these conditions requires optimizing agricultural technologies, improving the efficient use of inputs, and investing in technologies that can reduce resource consumption.
