For many agricultural operations, the timing of selling their production can decisively influence farm profitability. In the absence of their own storage facilities, farmers are often forced to sell their harvest immediately after collection, when market supply is high and prices tend to be lower.

Investments in silos or storage facilities allow farmers to manage the timing of commercialization more efficiently. By storing cereals for several months after harvest, producers can sometimes benefit from more favorable market prices.

The costs of building storage capacity vary depending on size and the technology used. For a silo with a capacity of several thousand tonnes, the investment can exceed several hundred thousand euros.

For large commercial farms, grain storage can generate significant economic benefits. In addition to providing commercial flexibility, storage allows for logistics optimization and the reduction of transport costs during the busiest periods of the harvest season.

In many agricultural operations across Europe, investments in storage infrastructure are considered an essential component of the farm’s economic strategy.
