Digitalization is a key factor for increasing efficiency and traceability in Romania’s meat industry. From farms to slaughterhouses and all the way to retail shelves, integrating digital solutions into the supply chain enables loss reduction, constant quality monitoring, and logistics optimization. More and more processors are investing in customized ERPs, smart labeling, and IoT systems.

A common example is QR codes applied on packaging, which provide end consumers with information on origin, slaughter date, feeding type, and logistics route. For processors, these solutions allow real-time analysis of flows, rapid intervention in case of non-compliance, and reduced bureaucracy in dealings with control authorities.

The costs of implementing an integrated digital system can range between €25,000 and €100,000, depending on complexity and company size. In return, the benefits include up to a 30% reduction in cold-chain losses and increased consumer confidence. Moreover, automating traceability ensures better preparedness for exports, especially to markets with strict regulations.

The challenges include a shortage of specialized technical staff, the fragmented nature of Romania’s supply chain, and the reluctance of some operators towards digitalization. Nevertheless, the trend is clear: without digital integration, medium- and long-term competitiveness will be significantly affected. Support through non-reimbursable funds and technological consultancy can accelerate this process for SMEs.
