According to Eurostat, in 2022, the agricultural production in the European Union (EU) was estimated at 537.5 billion euros at basic prices, representing a 19% increase compared to 2021. This marked a new peak and continued the upward trend that began in 2010.

The nominal value change largely reflected the sharp increase in the nominal price of agricultural goods and services overall (approximately +22.8%), with the production volume decreasing moderately compared to the 2021 level (estimated to be 3.1% lower).

These insights are derived from the economic accounts for agriculture (EAA) for 2022 published today by Eurostat. This news presents a handful of findings from the more detailed article "Statistics Explained."

Three-quarters of the EU's agricultural production value in 2022 came from seven EU countries:

  1. France (97.1 billion euros, equivalent to 18% of the EU total)
  2. Germany (76.2 billion euros, 14%)
  3. Italy (71.5 billion euros, 13%)
  4. Spain (63.0 billion euros, 12%)
  5. Poland (39.5 billion euros, 7%)
  6. The Netherlands (36.1 billion euros, 7%)
  7. Romania (22.2 billion euros, 4%)

All EU countries recorded an increase in the value of agricultural production in 2022 compared to 2021. The strongest growth rates were recorded in Estonia (+44%), Poland (+43%), and Lithuania (+42%), supported by rising prices.

Among other key producers, the value of agricultural production increased by 30% in Germany, 18% in the Netherlands, 16% in France and Italy, 10% in Spain, and 5% in Romania.

Slightly more than half (54%) of the EU's agricultural production value in 2022 came from crops (287.9 billion euros, +15% compared to 2021). Two-fifths (38%) came from animals and animal products (206.0 billion euros, +26% compared to 2021). The remaining share came from agricultural services and secondary activities.

The EU costs of agricultural inputs unrelated to investments (intermediate consumption) were 22% higher in 2022 than in 2021.

Changes in the value of agricultural production and intermediate consumption in 2022 led to a 15% increase in the gross value added generated by agriculture.
