Romanian dairy products have begun to gain ground in external markets, especially in the Middle East and North Africa, where demand for dairy is steadily increasing.
According to Eurostat data, in 2024 Romania exported dairy products worth €120 million, marking a 9% increase compared to the previous year. The main products exported are milk powder, cheeses, and long-shelf-life yogurts.
Demand in the Middle East is driven by demographic growth and rapid urbanization, while North Africa is becoming an attractive market due to changing consumption patterns and high dependence on imports. A FAO report estimates that dairy demand in the region will grow by 20% by 2030.
For Romanian processors, access to these markets requires adaptation to local standards, including Halal certifications and multilingual packaging.
Through the CAP Strategic Plan and the NRRP, there are funding lines to support exports and participation in international trade fairs. The success of Romanian exports depends on processors’ ability to adapt to external requirements and on institutional support in negotiating trade agreements.
Strengthening Romania’s presence in emerging markets could transform the country into a relevant regional player in the global dairy market.
