Romanian agriculture is strengthening its position on external markets, and its export potential remains significant. According to Eurostat (2024), Romania exported agri-food products worth €11.2 billion, an 8% increase compared to the previous year. The main destinations are Germany, Italy, and Bulgaria, but there is a notable expansion toward non-EU markets, particularly the Middle East, North Africa, and Central Asia.

Basic products — cereals, poultry meat, honey, and vegetable oils — continue to dominate exports. However, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADR) warns that added value remains low. Only 22% of exports come from processed goods, compared with the European average of 45%. To enhance competitiveness, Romania must develop its logistics infrastructure (ports, storage facilities, refrigerated transport) and diversify its range of certified products.

In 2024, the Agency for Rural Investment Financing (AFIR) funded 312 projects dedicated to developing processing capacities for export, with a total value of €175 million. In parallel, the Ministry of Economy launched the “Made in Romania – Food Export” program, offering support for producers participating in international fairs and trade missions.

In the long term, the success of Romanian agricultural exports will not be measured only in volume, but in value and recognition. When quality becomes a national brand, Romania can move from being a supplier of raw materials to becoming a key player in global agri-food trade.
