Romania’s Egg Production in 2024: Growth and Shifting Consumer Preferences
Romania produced approximately 6.4 billion eggs in 2024, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INS). This volume fully covers domestic demand and even allows for limited exports. Average consumption stands at 230 eggs per capita per year, placing Romania in line with the European average.
Commercial farms account for over 90% of production, with recent investments focused on the transition to alternative rearing systems (free range, organic), in line with European requirements on animal welfare. In 2024, around 18% of total production came from alternative systems, compared to just 10% in 2020.
The average retail price for conventional eggs was 0.65 RON/piece, while organic eggs exceeded 1.2 RON/piece. Market trends indicate a steady increase in demand for premium and sustainable products.
For 2025, the share of organic eggs on the Romanian market is expected to grow, supported by European agricultural policies and by consumers’ growing preference for healthy and ethical products.
