Romania’s poultry meat exports are 85% concentrated in the European Union, according to Eurostat 2024. However, extra-EU markets – particularly the Middle East, North Africa, and Southeast Asia – offer a strategic opportunity for diversification and for increasing farmers’ revenues.

In 2024, Romania exported approximately 300,000 tons of poultry meat, at an average price of €2,100/ton, below the European average of €2,400/ton. Extra-EU markets, where demand is rising, offer more favorable prices of €2,500–2,700/ton. However, access is conditional on strict veterinary certifications and compliance with international quality standards.

Poland, the European leader, has managed to double its exports to Middle Eastern countries over the past five years, demonstrating the potential of this strategy. Romania, through investments in processing and certifications, could follow the same model. Support through the PNS and bilateral trade partnerships could facilitate access to these markets.

Experts estimate that by 2030, Romania could increase poultry meat exports by 20% through diversification into extra-EU markets. This approach would reduce dependence on the European market and strengthen the global position of Romanian poultry farms.
