Romania’s Egg Production: Trends and Market Insights
Romania produces approximately 6 billion eggs annually, according to INS data for 2024, covering over 95% of domestic consumption needs. Large commercial farms account for nearly 80% of production, while the remainder comes from households and small farms.
Production Costs and Prices
Production costs have increased by around 12% over the past two years, mainly due to feed and energy expenses. The average farm-gate price of eggs in 2024 was 0.55 RON per egg, while retail prices reached 0.80–0.85 RON, depending on packaging type and applied welfare standards.
Market Trends
A significant trend is the growing demand for eggs from alternative systems (free-range or organic), which already represent 18% of the market, up from 12% in 2022. Farms investing in these systems benefit from prices 20–30% higher than conventional eggs.
Outlook for 2025
Funding programs through PNS and AFIR include support lines for modernizing housing and reducing environmental impact. Integrating farms into cooperatives and diversifying distribution channels are considered essential solutions for the sector’s economic stability.
