The breeding of Angus cattle for beef has experienced accelerated growth in Romania, driven by demand for premium products on the European and global markets. According to MADR data, Angus herds exceeded 100,000 head in 2024, compared to just 25,000 in 2015.
Angus farms are concentrated in Transylvania and Banat, regions with high-quality natural pastures. The economic yield is attractive: an Angus calf can be sold for export at €1,200–1,500, while matured beef sells for over 60 lei/kg in premium retail.
The success of this sector is based on certified genetics, traceability, and compliance with international quality standards. At the same time, integration into cooperatives and partnerships with modern slaughterhouses help reduce costs and strengthen bargaining power.
For 2025, the outlook remains favorable, supported by growing external demand. The main challenges are the lack of specialized labor and the need to expand local processing infrastructure. Nevertheless, Angus remains a success story of how Romanian farms can adapt to the requirements of a premium market.
