Milking frequency is a technical parameter with a direct impact on milk production and udder health. European analyses show that switching from two to three milkings per day can generate production increases ranging from 8 to 15%, depending on genetics, stage of lactation, and level of nutrition. The effect is more pronounced in the first 100 days of lactation.
Increasing milking frequency also influences somatic cell dynamics. In well-managed farms, somatic cell levels remain stable or may even decrease, due to more frequent udder emptying and reduced intramammary pressure. In the absence of rigorous hygiene, however, the risk of mastitis can increase.
In Romania, the application of three-times-a-day milking is concentrated in medium and large farms. For 2025, the decision to increase milking frequency must be correlated with the farm’s capacity to maintain hygiene and nutrition standards.
