The sheep sector is undergoing a period of adjustment at European level, and performance indicators show significant differences between countries. Lambing performance—the number of lambs weaned per 100 ewes—ranges between 110 and 150 in European farms, depending on genetics, nutrition, and pasture quality. In Romania, the average ranges between 105 and 120, with specialized operations exceeding these values due to more rigorous management.
Average daily weight gain in young sheep ranges between 250 and 320 g/day in high-performing EU farms, while in Romania’s extensive systems values are often 200–240 g/day, influenced by seasonality and pasture quality. Lamb mortality at European level falls between 4 and 8%, a range that also includes well-organized Romanian farms.
European demand for sheep meat remains stable, with strong markets in France, Italy, and Greece, maintaining commercial opportunities for Romanian breeders. In 2025, sector competitiveness will depend on improved reproductive performance, reduced technological losses, and more efficient utilization of pasture resources.
