Romania’s Forest Area in 2024: Developments and Regional Distribution

In 2024, Romania’s forest area increased by 2,271 hectares compared to the previous year. However, the regenerated forest area registered a 4.0% decrease compared to 2023.

Regional Distribution of Forest Resources

The distribution of forest land by development regions reveals a significant concentration in:

  • CENTRU region – 19.2% of total forest area
  • NORD-EST – 18.2%
  • VEST – 16.2%
  • NORD-VEST – 15.3%
  • SUD-VEST OLTENIA – 12.4%
  • SUD-MUNTENIA – 10.0%
  • SUD-EST – 8.3%
  • BUCUREȘTI-ILFOV – 0.4%

Volume of Harvested Timber by Region

The highest volume of harvested timber was recorded in the NORD-EST region, accounting for 28.4% of the total harvested wood volume, followed by:

  • CENTRU – 25.3%
  • VEST – 11.9%
  • NORD-VEST – 11.6%
  • SUD-MUNTENIA – 9.1%
  • SUD-VEST OLTENIA – 7.0%
  • SUD-EST – 6.4%
  • BUCUREȘTI-ILFOV – 0.3%

Forest Regeneration Efforts by Region

The largest areas where forest regeneration works were carried out were located in:

  • NORD-EST – 20.6% of total regenerated area
  • CENTRU – 19.0%
  • SUD-EST – 13.7%
  • NORD-VEST – 13.6%
  • SUD-VEST OLTENIA – 11.7%
  • VEST – 11.6%
  • SUD-MUNTENIA – 9.2%
  • BUCUREȘTI-ILFOV – 0.6%
