Mangalița pork represents a high-value agri-food resource, rediscovered in recent decades as a viable alternative to intensive production. The breed, originating from the Carpathian Basin, stands out through its superior lipid profile, with a high content of monounsaturated and omega-3 fatty acids — making it not only flavorful but also healthier compared to other types of pork.

After a sharp decline in the post-communist period, livestock numbers have been rebuilt thanks to the efforts of individual breeders and targeted support from several NGOs. Today, Romania has approximately 100 authorized farms raising Mangalița pigs, though market potential far exceeds this current capacity.

The high price — between 30 and 60 lei/kg for fresh meat — is justified by its organoleptic quality, traceability, and versatility in fine dining gastronomy. Demand is particularly strong in the HoReCa sector, in specialty stores, and for export to countries such as Germany, France, and Japan.

To ensure the sustainable development of this niche, an integrated approach is essential: clear regulations for product standardization, protection of the breed as part of the national genetic heritage, and the inclusion of Mangalița pork within a national agri-food brand focused on quality and sustainability.
