Romania is increasingly facing periods of severe drought, and water management has become a strategic priority. According to the National Institute of Statistics (INS, 2024), over 35% of the country’s agricultural area is exposed annually to the risk of aridization, while only 18% benefits from modern irrigation systems.
Through the National Irrigation Program (PNI), the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADR) and the National Land Improvement Agency (ANIF) allocated in 2024 funds totaling €1.5 billion for the modernization of both main and secondary infrastructure. In parallel, the Agency for Rural Investment Financing (AFIR) is supporting private irrigation projects under Measure DR-25, offering non-reimbursable funding of up to €1 million per beneficiary.
According to the Joint Research Centre (JRC, 2024), modernizing hydrotechnical systems, integrating soil moisture sensors, and using satellite technology for crop planning can increase water efficiency by 25–30%. These solutions are becoming vital in an increasingly unpredictable climate context.
Water management is no longer merely an infrastructure issue, but a matter of strategy. Farms that integrate technologies for resource control and reuse will be the ones capable of withstanding the climatic and economic pressures of the coming decade.
