Mortality during the finishing phase is a sensitive indicator of management quality in pig farms. At European level, values considered normal are below 3–4%, while exceeding the 5% threshold points to microclimate or stocking density problems.
Insufficient ventilation, the accumulation of harmful gases, and temperature fluctuations increase stress and susceptibility to respiratory diseases. Maintaining temperature within the optimal range can reduce mortality by 1–1.5 percentage points.
In Romanian farms, the differences between modernized units and those with outdated infrastructure are evident. In 2025, controlling mortality in the finishing phase remains a key criterion for the economic stability of pig farms.
