Romania’s Aquaculture Potential and the Role of RAS Systems
Romania has significant aquaculture potential, yet production in 2024 reached only 12,500 tons, far below the estimated capacity of over 25,000 tons annually. The key solution for increasing output lies in Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS), which enable high yields on limited surface areas.
A RAS unit can produce up to 100–120 kg of fish per cubic meter of water, compared to just 15–20 kg in traditional ponds. While initial investment costs are high, the efficiency and control over water quality and feed make these systems highly attractive in the long run.
The price of fish produced in RAS farms ranges between 20 and 30 RON/kg, depending on the species, but the quality and traceability of the product justify the difference compared to fish from traditional systems or imports.
Experts believe that financial support through POPAM and the adoption of digital technologies for monitoring and optimization could double Romania’s aquaculture production by 2030, reducing imports and offering consumers fresh, safe, locally produced fish.
