The profitability of crop farming is determined by the interaction between production costs, crop yields, and price developments on the grain market. In Romania, these variables are influenced both by climatic factors and by the dynamics of international agricultural markets.
According to Eurostat data and analyses by the European Commission on agricultural markets, the average production costs for major crops in Romania vary significantly depending on the technological level of farms. For wheat cultivation, total production costs frequently range between €700 and €900 per hectare, including seeds, fertilizers, plant protection products, fuel, and agricultural operations.
Under normal climatic conditions, the average wheat yield in Romania ranges between 4.5 and 5.5 tonnes per hectare. At an average price of approximately €200 per tonne, gross revenues can reach around €900–€1,100 per hectare. Under these circumstances, the gross profit before subsidies remains relatively limited and depends heavily on fluctuations in prices and production.
In the case of maize, production costs are comparable or slightly higher, often ranging between €800 and €1,000 per hectare. Yields can vary significantly depending on climatic conditions, but in favorable agricultural years, production often exceeds 6–7 tonnes per hectare.
Rapeseed, one of the crops with higher commercial value, involves higher production costs, but market prices are also higher compared with cereals. Depending on yield levels and market developments, this crop can generate higher economic margins.
In this context, subsidies granted through the Common Agricultural Policy become an important element of profitability. Direct payments can represent a significant component of farms’ final profit, contributing to the stabilization of income in a sector characterized by high volatility.
