Soil Water Reserves Remain Low at the Start of 2025

At the beginning of 2025, soil water reserves continued to be affected by low precipitation levels.

According to the National Meteorological Administration (ANM), January 2025 recorded only 10 liters per square meter (l/mp) of precipitation, representing 30% of the multiannual average, while February 2025 saw just 8.5 l/mp, 22% of the multiannual average.

Adaptation Measures and Outlook

To address the challenges posed by soil water deficits, farmers and authorities must adopt adaptation measures such as:

  • Implementing efficient irrigation systems – Using modern irrigation technologies can ensure the necessary water supply for crops, reducing reliance on natural precipitation.
  • Selecting drought-resistant crops – Choosing plant varieties adapted to dry conditions can help maintain agricultural production during water shortages.
  • Practicing sustainable agriculture – Applying soil moisture conservation techniques, such as mulching or minimal tillage, can help retain moisture and reduce evaporation.

Conclusion

As of March 1, 2025, soil water reserves on agricultural land in Romania remain insufficient in many regions, primarily due to the low precipitation levels of recent months.

To ensure the sustainability of agricultural production, farmers and authorities must collaborate in implementing adaptation measures to address changing climate conditions.
