Romania’s pork sector is going through a difficult period, marked by a major gap between domestic production and consumption. According to INS data, Romania produces approximately 250,000 tons of pork annually, while consumption exceeds 600,000 tons. The difference of over 50% is covered through imports, mainly from Spain, Germany, and Poland.

This high dependence on external markets makes the sector vulnerable to price fluctuations and trade risks. In 2024, pork imports increased by more than 12% compared to the previous year, putting pressure on local processors as well as small and medium-sized farms.

African Swine Fever has further affected production, reducing the national herd by more than 25% over the past five years. However, through investments in biosecurity and support provided under PNS and AFIR, farms can access financing lines for modernization and for reducing reliance on imports.

Experts believe that Romania could reduce the deficit to 30–35% over the next 7–10 years, provided support programs are effectively implemented and farmers form associations to increase competitiveness.
