Food security is a strategic objective of the European Union, reinforced by recent crises generated by the pandemic and geopolitical conflicts. The “Farm to Fork” Strategy and Regulation (EU) 2017/625 on official controls establish the framework for safe and sustainable production.

Romania, with its high agricultural potential, plays an essential role but remains dependent on imports for certain categories of food products. Eurostat shows that Romania’s agri-food trade deficit exceeded €2.5 billion in 2024. FAO notes that food security involves not only availability but also accessibility and price stability.

The National Institute of Statistics (INS) confirms that over 15% of Romanian households are vulnerable to food price increases. “Food security is not only an economic issue but also one of national security,” stated an agricultural policy expert. For Romania, integration into the European strategy requires the modernization of storage infrastructure, support for local processors, and increased agricultural productivity.

In the long term, strengthening food security will depend on Romania’s ability to balance exports with domestic needs and to make efficient use of available European resources.
