Surface area per animal: space that decides production, not just comfort

In many farms, stocking density is set at the limit in order to maximize housing capacity. In practice, each additional animal reduces the performance of the others, and the effect appears directly in both consumption and production.

In dairy farms, reduced resting space or overcrowding in the feeding area can lead to production decreases of 5–10%. Cows spend less time lying down, which directly affects rumination and milk production.

In the swine sector, increasing density beyond the optimal level reduces average daily gain and intensifies competition. Weight differences within the same batch can reach 10–15%, even when feeding is properly managed.

In poultry farms, high density affects uniformity and increases the risk of health issues. Uneven distribution within the housing facility is the first sign that space is no longer sufficient.

The issue is not farm capacity, but the balance between numbers and performance. Space is not a wasted cost, but a direct production factor.
