The digitalisation of livestock farms is advancing rapidly across Europe, and Romania has begun to narrow the gap. According to the European Commission – Digital Agriculture Review 2024, automated animal monitoring systems are among the most effective investments for cattle, sheep and goat farms. These technologies enable continuous tracking of biological parameters, behaviour, feed intake and productivity.

In dairy farms, DG AGRI reports show that the use of heat detection sensors reduces reproductive losses by 20–30%, while rumination monitoring allows early identification of digestive and metabolic disorders. In beef systems, automatic weighing and movement tracking help optimise the fattening period and improve growth performance.

In Romania, interest in digitalisation is increasingly visible in AFIR-funded investment projects, where demand is growing for sensors, farm management software and automated equipment. Although adoption remains lower than in Western European countries, farms that have implemented such solutions report better alignment between resource use and livestock performance.

Digital monitoring shortens response times to health issues and improves the quality of managerial decisions. Farms that adopt technology gain in efficiency, predictability and operational safety.
