Deere & Company has announced that it has entered into an agreement with SpaceX to provide farmers with a state-of-the-art satellite communication service (SATCOM).
A Satellite Solution
Using the Starlink network, this solution will enable farmers facing rural connectivity challenges to fully utilize precision agriculture technologies.
The SATCOM solution will connect both new and existing machines through satellite internet service and robust satellite terminals.
This will enable technologies such as autonomy, real-time data sharing, remote diagnostics, enhanced self-repair solutions, and machine-to-machine communication, all helping farmers work more efficiently while reducing downtime.
Starlink Terminals on Machines
John Deere's SATCOM solution will utilize SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet constellation. To activate this solution, John Deere dealers will install a robust Starlink terminal on compatible machines, along with a 4G LTE JDLink modem to connect the machine to the John Deere Operations Center.
The SATCOM solution will be initially available through a limited launch in the United States and Brazil starting in the second half of 2024.
"Connectivity unlocks vast opportunities that were previously limited or unavailable," said Aaron Wetzel, Vice President for Production & Precision Ag Systems at John Deere. "For example, throughout the year, farmers must accomplish tasks in extremely short timeframes. This requires executing incredibly precise production steps, coordinating between machines, and managing machine performance simultaneously. Each of these areas is enhanced by connectivity, making the entire operation more efficient, effective, and profitable."
